Book Review: Building Kitchen Cabinets by Udo Schmidt

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Building Kitchen Cabinets is another how to book put out by Taunton Press, I picked up this copy to help me build my own set of kitchen cabinets and I have  to say it is one of the better how to books on the subject for the do it yourself-er wood worker. Udo walks you from start to finish, not only on how to build the cabinets but  starts you off with a trip thought the workshop to see if you have everything you will need to get the job done. I think this is where the book really shines, He shows you that all you need is a simple setup with what just about any good do-it-yourself shop would already have. One of the other things that I found to very valuable in this book is on just about every page you will find a few Pro Tips. I have found these to be great not only for helping with building cabinets but you can use them in many other areas of your wood working. From the beginning to the end this book is packed full of detail and know how.

Udo covers the whole project in 14 chapters with hundreds of photos and line drawings to help you feel like you are looking right over his shoulder. He will walk you thought from the basic layout and design covering every detail; right down to hanging them puppies on the wall and putting down the counter top. If you are a serious do-it-yourselfer and you can’t build a simple set of kitchen cabinet with this book you had best to head for the yellow pages. As a fellow wood worker and do-it-myselfer I know you will want this book on your bookshelf, if you are planning to build cabinets.

Let them draw

Friday, November 14th, 2008

I think one of the best things we can do with children in the way of helping them to find their creative sides is to make sure they have lots of stuff to be creative with. I know my wife thinks it is funny, that everytime I’m out and I see paper on sell I buy allot of it or pencils that pretty much goes for any kind of craft supplies. I like to keep allot of it on hand and I let the girls  pretty much have free hand at it with a few limits some days they can get pretty creative. One thing I like to see is them using chalk on paper I have saved some very pretty pictures, those are for when I’m old and toothless I can sit on the porch and dream back to my early days. So let them draw and keep lots of paper and chalk on hand and let them use it freely. Having little ones can be allot of fun if you let it, secret here is to just get in there with them, for we are all kids at heart,. God Bless you and your families.

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

Here is my newest little helper, most of the time you will find her helping herself to a cuddle with her mommy, she will soon be running around with her big sisters.

We also have new kittens on te homestead, looks like Sarah has picked out which one she wants to keep. We are now back home from the city for the winter and we are starting to work on the house again. Our first job will be  to dig a water well and then put a porch on the side of the house.
